Detector Optionalby Mary Lois VanSooy
Twenty-five years ago, long before Allan and Donna Fenner became members of the West Coast Prospector and Treasure Hunters, they were planning a family camping trip with their two young children. In preparation for the trip, Allan was concerned about some of their personal valuables. He decided the attic would be a secure place to hide these items, so he carefully placed them out of sight. With everything in order, they were off on vacation.
Upon their return home the family activities resumed their normal pace. At one point Allan wondered where he had placed his class ring for he had not seen it for a time. As he thought about it he figured that he had removed his ring, set it down and forgotten the location. There was also the thought that it had been stolen since the family had experienced that trauma previously. Thoughts of his ring surfaced occasionally but the ring did not. Allan had graduated from Aviation High School in 1960 and the school had since been demolished for the expansion of TRW. Now he has lost the material evidence of the education.
The years pass all too rapidly and the Fenners retire, acquire metal detectors and join the West Coasters. New friendships quickly develop and among these friends are the current president Bruce Gentner and his wife Squeek. When Bruce is not swinging his detector he is supervisor for a pest control company. In this capacity, the Fenners recently needed his help with a pest problem in their attic. As Bruce examined the area for the dreaded pesky critters, his trained eye spotted a deteriorating plastic bag containing gold, some silver dollars and wheaties hidden behind some ductwork. As he climbed out of the attic his shout could be heard throughout the house. Bruce had found Allan's lost class ring.
Allan proudly wears his ring once again as he considers the true value of treasure - good friends.
